Here are the rules for MagnetXTM for those who want to know exactly how to play and for players to keep up to date with the most up to date rules or in case they have lost theirs.

INTRODUCTION:

 

MagnetXTM is a game of strategy, wit, hand-eye coordination, action and reaction, unlike any other game.  The rules take only a moment to learn and can be played by nearly all ages.  Though simple in concept MagnetXTM is comprised of a fine balance of skill and luck.

 

MagnetXTM is designed for two to six players.  The game consists of a 9” x 9” playing field (hereto called The Field) and 20 polished stone magnets (hereto called Stones or if not in play on The Field, The Pile).


BASIC GAME

 

To begin the game, The Field is placed on a level table or hard (non-ferrous1) surface between the players.  The Pile is then given to the youngest player.  This player must choose a Stone from The Pile and place it anywhere on The Field.  The Pile is then passed to the player to their left.  A player's turn begins when they take possession of The Pile and ends when the next player takes possession of The Pile. 

 

Each player must, in turn, choose a Stone from The Pile and place it somewhere on The Field.  If in placing a Stone, other Stones shift, spin or move that is allowed.  Stones that come in contact with each other, fall off The Field or are touched by a player are called Foul Stones2.  During game play it is important to keep The Pile far away from the Field, so that the Pile does not cause any Foul Stones.  Any player who causes Foul Stones by any means during their turn is out. The Foul Stones are removed from The Field, placed back in The Pile and play continues until there is only one player left who is declared the winner.  Any player who places the 20th Stone is automatically declared the winner.

 

In a three or more player game, players have the option to reverse the direction of play by successfully placing a second Stone on their turn.

 

ADVANCED GAME

 

Each player begins with 20 points.  If a player causes Foul Stones, that player must carefully remove them from The Field3.  The number of Foul Stones are subtracted from that player's score then placed back in The Pile and The Pile is passed to the next player.  Players are eliminated when their score reaches zero, last player wins.

 

1.     If the table is non-ferrous, the magnets won't stick to it so it's a good surface to play on.  If you don't have a good surface just put the game on top of the box, which should be good enough even if you are on a ferrous table.

2.     The Stone being placed; not pre-existing Stones, may be touched, moved, adjusted, placed back on the board or even replaced with a different Stone until that player's turn ends and is not Foul if it falls off, unless it causes other Stones to Foul.

3.     A placed Stone that does not come in contact with a Foul Stone, but has caused Stones to Foul; does not count against a player's score and remains on the board.  A Stone in hand, that has not yet been placed on The Field and has not become a Fouled Stone, but has caused Foul Stones, does not count against a players score and is returned to The Pile.

MagnetXTM can be played with any number of game variations.  Here are some suggestions:


1.      Double Trouble.  Played with any number of players.  Each player must place two Stones on their turn.

2.      Skip.  Played with any number of players.  Any player may choose not to place a Stone and skip instead, but must place two Stones on their next turn.

3.      Lefty.  Played with any number of players.  All players must use only their off hand while placing Stones on The Field.

4.      Solo Play.  Test your skill and see how many Stones you can get on the Field.  In Solo Play cheating is allowed, only the end result matters. 14 or less = Rookie, 15 = OK, 16 = Good, 17 = Very Good, 18 = Expert, 19 = Professional, 20 = Take a picture and e-mail to This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. Players are encouraged to invent variations of their own, as long as they are simple, clear and agreed upon before play begins.

The game concept was created by Alfred Wenzl while on vacation, and played immediately with his family.  The game was shown to and played with Glen Banducci and then with Bruce Smith and his sons.  The company PsyX Games was formed and MagnetXTM was brought to market under the driving force of Bruce Smith.
